Times are tough right now due to the COVID-19 crisis and if you find yourself either out of work or in need of better conditions, you may be considering how to enhance your employability and chances of finding decent work within the tech industry.

How to Get a Job in Tech Industry

4 Tips on How to Get a Job in Tech Industry During COVID-19 Crisis

Here we share four ways you can do just that.

1. Revamp your resumé

Within seconds of looking at your resumé, an employer will have made their mind up. In other words, it is imperative that you make a fantastic impression of what it looks like and the information it contains. Check your spelling and grammar as well as ensure that everything is organized neatly and properly aligned.

After all, if you are trying to return to or make your mark within the tech industry, an inability to use the most basic of programs, such as Word or PowerPoint, to organize your resumé will reflect terribly.

2. Update your tech knowledge

Remaining static is impossible in the tech industry. It is perhaps one of the most innovative and fast-moving areas in which you could work, so stagnancy will not do you any favors if you are looking for a new opportunity. Updating your skills could be as simple as attending further training, such as in xr design or a specific program.

Seeking out ways in which you can update your skills and show a willingness to continue to learn will ensure that prospective employers look favorably on your application and desire to be part of their company. Furthermore, the want to avoid stagnancy will show that you are keen to continue to progress.

3. Get more experience

If you are new to the tech industry or keen to get your foot through the door, gaining experience may well help you. Of course, you are probably wondering how you can get this without being given an opportunity. However, it is possible to take a junior role and show your skills and eagerness to work at a higher level, gaining vital skills and the necessary experience whilst doing so.

Alternatively, you could, alongside an existing job, do a day or so a week of voluntary work within a relevant company. Doing so may allow you to shadow someone doing a role you are keen to. This approach can also help you to get to know people within the industry who, if impressed by your dedication and enthusiasm, could act as referees for any future job applications or could put in good work for you with another business in the industry.

4. Work on your soft skills

While we have focused on specifics to the tech industry, our final point relates to soft skills, which are useful in all job roles. Teamwork, problem-solving, positive communication, and a good work ethic, for example, are all things that prospective employers look for in their candidates. You could have a high level of tech know-how, but if you are going to be customer-facing and are unable to deal with conflict, this will be problematic.

You can spend time working on your soft skills by undertaking relevant training or by practicing these skills within an existing role, throwing your all at making improvements.
