Is self discipline truly the secret to success? There are several factors that may contribute to the triumphs of a business, but arguably, self discipline is one of the key ingredients that help to build something from the ground up. It may even be the missing element in all of your past failures. So how do you use it in managing your business?

Why Self Discipline is Important for Business

5 Reasons Why Self Discipline is Important for Business

1. Focus

In Napoleon Hill’s 10 Rules for Self-Discipline, he said that we must search “for the seed of an equivalent benefit” within unpleasant circumstances. Starting a business is a very challenging and often grueling process. Before you see any fruits from your labor, you’re going to encounter many missteps along the way. The important thing is to beat on against the current and to use self-discipline in keeping your focus because somewhere in those failures are very valuable “seeds” of learning that will help you make better choices later on.

2. Patience

Before Oprah Winfrey gained national syndication, she was once told by a producer that she was “unfit for television news” before getting fired. Imagine saying something like this to Oprah today! Success also means biding your time because in business, as in life, we must learn to trust the process. Remember, a tree doesn’t grow overnight! There will be days when you feel like nothing is happening and your goals are still out of reach, but you have to trust that your own time will come.

3. Passion

As Hegel put it, “Nothing great in the world has been achieved without passion.” For a business to flourish, it means having enough passion to see things through. You might find that this bit is what will make self-discipline come naturally to you even when things start getting hard. Many of us enter business precisely due to the enthusiasm we have for our product. The two go hand in hand and, when applied to business, can almost certainly spell success. Our money is on the bet that with enough passion and self discipline, you can accomplish absolutely anything.

4. Perseverance

Some people are probably not that attracted to self-discipline because it can mean pushing yourself to keep struggling even when the stars just aren’t aligning. But having enough control means overcoming your fears and other people’s doubts. After all, aren’t achievements so much more satisfying to attain if you can make it despite all the challenges? Beautiful endings are nice to think about but the real story is what happens along the way.

5. Last Thoughts

Self-discipline takes a lot of effort to develop and it is not permanent; you have to keep at it every single day. It doesn’t have to mean being perfect all the time. On the contrary, it means learning from every bad decision because there really will be a lot!

You will probably discover that a lot of the most successful people you look up to, whatever their lines of interest and work, are able to get where they are because of this secret. Hopefully, someday, this will also become your lasting legacy to those who will come after you.
