There’s no denying that COVID-19 has changed the way we live our lives. From wearing masks and keeping at least six feet apart from others to working remote full-time, we all likely have a different set of priorities than we did at the beginning of 2020. And these new priorities don’t seem to be changing anytime soon.

Post-Pandemic Smart Homes Future

In fact, our current way of life is so set in stone that we can expect to see technology start to cater to our new needs. One of the biggest shifts in the technology space is in the smart home industry. After all, where are we spending most of our time these days? At home. And as we look to make our homes more convenient, reliable and just plain smarter, technology companies will be doing the same.

To take a look at just how the pandemic has altered smart homes, the team at Hippo took a deep dive into industry trends and consumer preferences. Here’s a breakdown of what they found.

Smart Homes will Cater to Individual Needs

Overall, you can expect homes to work harder in the coming years. To help themselves stand out from the pack, smart home companies will likely be creating products aimed at solving specific issues. Things such as keeping your home virus-free and your pantry consistently stocked weren’t much of an issue in years past. But now? It’s one of our top priorities.

Other categories of smart home products, that have always been popular, will continue to grow. And with more people working at home than ever before, home offices will become much more tech-centric. Smart home office devices will be made to solve more unique problems that occur when the whole family is working, learning and living at home.

Contactless appliances and smart humidity sensors will help to keep viruses at bay throughout your home, while smart pantries and virtual assistants will keep track of your food and toiletry inventory to let you know when you're almost out of toilet paper or bread (remember the great toilet paper shortage of spring 2020?). For home office upgrades, noise-cancelling windows to reduce feedback on zoom calls and indoor cameras to help you keep an eye on the kids downstairs are expected to be all the rage.

Home Design is Getting a Second Look

Additionally, COVID-19 is changing the way we design our homes. And while you may not be able to complete a total home renovation during quarantine, you might be one of many that is taking a second look at how they use each room in their home. Things like front yard hangout spots and remote-learning rooms will be high on the list of home updates this year, to give everyone their own space at home and get in some (distanced) social time.
